Georgiana: 4th Duchess of Newcastle Janet Roberts
Find out:
- How she met Henry Pelham Clinton, 4th Duke of Newcastle
- How he took her to Clumber in North Nottinghamshire, now owned by the National Trust
- About their enduring love, and their many children
- How Georgiana's sudden and unexpected death at the age of 34 affected the Duke
Following Georgiana's tragic death the Duke commission Robert Smirke,
the leading architect of the day to design a family mausoleum. Very
unusually this was also to incorporate a parish church.
Whilst this
work was being carried out the Duke contacted Richard Westmacott about a
marble memorial to his beloved wife. Westmacott suggested a Madonna and
child, but the Duke wrote in his diary of 1825:
 |
"... I shall prefer something else. I have given him the idea. It
is to be my dear child Anna Maria borne in a cloud, ready to receive
my beloved and sore lamented wife, who looks towards her having in
each arm an infant who are preparing to advance to Heaven."
