Hockerton Housing Project
It is possible to go on a tour of this housing development, which
consists of five houses buried in an earth bank, so is completely concealed from
the nearby A617 which links Newark to Mansfield. The community is not on
main gas, sewage or water supply. They are grid-linked for electricity, which is
augmented with wind turbines. Any excess 'green' electricity generated can
be provided to the grid for use elsewhere. Here a group tour look at the photo-voltaic cells which help to generate electricity. They have climbed the grass bank that insulates the houses, and are in fact standing on the roof.
The view from the roof also shows the community sheep and in
the far distance the allotment where they grow their own fruit and vegetables.
Electricity is also produced by two wind
turbines, whilst sewage is treated by a series of reed beds. The remainder of
the lake is so pure it is used for recreational purposes.
The houses have conservatories along the front which traps solar heat. In this picture it is possible to see the photo-voltaic cells running along the roof line shown in the first picture.
Continuing their commitment to live in a holistic way and
cause as little pollution or carbon dioxide emissions as possible, there is a
communal electric car.
There is also a strong educational element, not only with various types of tours, but with publications and information boards.
