'Little Castle' - Bolsover

Bolsover Castle is a semi-ruined 17th century mansion.  Standing high on a hilltop it looks west towards the Peak District, offering stunning views.

There is an impressive building used as a Riding School, with a gallery for spectators.  However the 'highlight' is the Little Castle, a castellated villa completed in 1621 by Sir Charles Cavendish, younger son of Bess of Hardwick.  His son, Sir William, a leading figure at the court of Charles 1 considerably extended the building.

Probably designed by Robert Smythson, who built Hardwick Hall, the 'Little Castle' is an imposing building with crenulated roof-line and ogee-capped corner turrets.

The castle was designed not for defence but for elegant living - a retreat from the world to an imaginary golden age of chivalry and pleasure.

Exotic ceilings are a feature of the 'Little Castle'.

Many of the paintings have symbolic and erotic themes.

Outside the 'Little Castle' is a walled garden containing the Venus Fountain.

This is surprisingly deep, with seats and many more sculptures - maybe for secret, unseen trysts!

Bolsover Castle is managed by English Heritage and there is an excellent audio tour available.
